Details

From 2002 to 2007 I was tasked by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to document everything associated with the response to and recovery from federally declared natural disasters. During those years I documented the damage these disasters caused, the response of FEMA and the work of other United States federal agencies, such as the National Guard and Corps of Engineers. My job also included documenting the work of volunteer agencies, including, but not limited to, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

The disasters that I worked on (see list below) included the re-entry failure of the space shuttle Columbia, tornadoes, floods, forest fires and many hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina in which I spent seven months on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The photos for FEMA were shot in color using digital SLR cameras. There were no digital enhancements made to the photographs, only small adjustments were made for exposure.
